Benefits of the Agíkúyú indigenous cultural foods.

  1. Low glycemic Index. It improves the health of insulin receptors, thus preventing the pathophysiology of type two Diabetes Mellitus.

  2. Rich in phytochemicals. Imagine a plant that is able to " prevent itself" from pests and diseases. The Agíkúyú indigenous cultural foods are rich in these bio-active compounds.

  4. Promote emotional and mental health.

  5. Regenerate the soil.

  6. Promote the local economy.

The journey to restoring these foods started in July 2024. It has been an exciting and continuous learning curve.

Among the foods that we restored is Managu.

Managu is one of the Agíkúyú indigenous cultural vegetables that we have restored on the farms and the table. Managu was fading away from the farms and the table.

 Nutrition Benefits of Managu.

  1. Rich in iron 6mg per 100g. This means it meets 75 % and 33% of RDA for Iron in an adult male and woman respectively.

  2. Rich in Glycoalkaloids (Solamargine, solasonine and solasodine), especially the ripe purple fruits. Glycoalkaloids have anti-cancer properties.

Glycoalkaloids were first isolated from nightshade in the 1820s by a French apothecary and a Swiss chemist.

  3. Low glycemic index.

  4. Rich in dietary fiber.
